LITHUANIAN STUDIES AT VYTAUTAS MAGNUS UNIVERSITY
In the autumn semester of the academic year 2019-2020, 22 students successfully completed the programme of Lithuanian studies offered by the Faculty of Humanities at Vytautas Magnus University. All students were participants of the project “Lithuanian Academic Scheme for International Cooperation in Baltic Studies” (No. 09.3.1-ESFA-V-709-01-0002).
TRAINING COURSE FOR TEACHERS OF LITHUANIAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
On 20-24 January, a training course for teachers of Lithuanian as a foreign language was organized at the Faculty of Philology at Vilnius University. During the course, its participants improved their knowledge in the areas such as Lithuanian history, Lithuanian literature, and teaching Lithuanian as a foreign language.
ASSOC. PROF. DR. GUSTAVAS JUZALA VISITING THE UNIVERSITY OF WARSAW
On 16-20 November, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gustavas Juzala from the Department of Baltic Studies at Vilnius University was visiting the University of Warsaw. During his visit, Juzala delivered lectures on the musical dialects of the Lithuanian ethnographic regions.
PROF. DR. JURGIS PAKERYS VISITING HELSINKI UNIVERSITY
On 19-22 November, Prof. Dr. Jurgis Pakerys from the Department of Baltic Studies at Vilnius University was visiting Helsinki University, where he delivered lectures entitled “Periphrastic causative constructions in Baltic” and “Morphological adaptation of verbal and adjectival borrowings in Latvian and Lithuanian”.
ASSOC. PROF. DR. VIGMANTAS BUTKUS FROM THE INSTITUTE OF LITHUANIAN LITERATURE AND FOLKLORE VISITING ADAM MICKIEWICH UNIVERSITY IN POZNAN
On 17-21 November, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vigmantas Butkus, a senior researcher from the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore was visiting Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, where he gave a lecture and conducted a seminar on the relationships between the Baltic literatures.
PROF. DR. LINA PLAUŠINAITYTĖ VISITING GOETHE UNIVERSITY FRANKFURT
On November 11-16, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lina Plaušinaitytė from Vilnius University was visiting the Institute for Empirical Linguistics at Goethe University Frankfurt, where she gave a lecture on the methodology of the manuscript dictionary by the lexicographer and folklore collector Jacob Brodowski (Das handschriftliche deutsch-litauische Wörterbuch von Jacob Brodowski – ein lexikographisches Methodensammelsurium des 18. Jhs.). During her visit, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lina Plaušinaitytė also participated in seminars, discussions and meetings with the researchers of the Institute.
ASSOC. PROF. DR. LAIMA ANGLICKIENĖ AND DR. JURGITA MACIJAUSKAITĖ-BONDA VISITING YURIY FEDKOVYCH CHERNIVTSI NATIONAL UNIVERSITY
On 4-11 November 2019, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Laima Anglickienė and Dr. Jurgita Macijauskaitė-Bonda from Vytautas Magnus University were visiting the Centre of Baltic Studies at Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University in Ukraine. During their visit, they met students studying the Lithuanian language and delivered lectures on Lithuanian ethnology and folklore. Jurgita Macijauskaitė-Bonda covered topics related to folk narratives, giving more attention to etiological and belief legends. Laima Anglickienė focused on festive customs and traditions. Associate professor and Ukrainian students watched a film on traditional festivals and discussed similarities and differences between Lithuanian and Ukrainian traditions. After the presentation a quiz on Lithuania and its traditions was organized.
During their visit, lecturers from Vytautas Magnus University also met the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, the Head of the Department of Foreign Languages, the Head of the Department of International relations and other colleagues from Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University with whom they discussed possibilities for further cooperation.
56th International Academic Conference in honour of Professor Arturs Ozols “Grammar and language acquisition”
The Chair of Latvian and General Linguistics and the Chair of Baltic Linguistics of the University of Latvia’s Faculty of Humanities, The Department of Latvian and Baltic Studies invite submissions of abstracts for the 56th International Academic Conference in honour of Professor Arturs Ozols “Grammar and language acquisition” to be held on March 19–20, 2020.
The conference will focus on the principles of grammatical description and interpretation of grammatical concepts in first-language (incl. dialects and subdialects) and second-language acquisition from both a synchronic and a diachronic perspective.
We welcome presentations addressing various grammatical phenomena found in Latvian and also in other languages from a general, areal, typological, cognitive, functional, and contrastive point of view.
