8th International Lithuanian Congress
2026-02-23On the 14th to the 15th of May, 2026, the 8th International Lithuanian Congress will take place at Wrocław University. We invite researchers and every person interested in Lithuania, its language, culture, history, politics, and the relations between Lithuania, Poland, and the countries they neighbor. This year’s Congress commemorates anniversaries that matter both for Lithuania’s history and current affairs.
The year 2026 marks the celebrations of the 35th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Poland and Lithuania. Following Lithuania’s 1990 declaration of independence, and its international recognition in 1991, on the 5th of September 1991, a declaration was signed, regulating Polish-Lithuanian neighborly relations, which paved way for a new degree of cooperation. The contemplation of this process undoubtedly interlaces with the ideas of Jerzy Giedroyć, whose 120th birth anniversary will be celebrated this year. His political ideas, especially the concept of ULB (Ukraine-Lithuania-Belarus), underlining the significance of Eastern European states’ sovereignty and partnership with Poland, remain as a point of reference in contemporary studies of the region’s security, international cooperation and the future of Polish-Lithuanian relations.
This year’s Congress will also serve to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Liudvikas Rėza‘s (Ludwig Rhesa‘s) birth. Rėza was a researcher, publisher, and promoter of Lithuanian literature, which creates numerous opportunities to reflect upon his contribution to research of the Enlightenment era’s Lithuanian language, literature, and culture.
Continuing the tradition of past editions, the 8th International Lithuania Congress invites researchers of various fields, as well as social and cultural activists to submit papers to be presented in the following sections of the Congress:
· Lithuanian language and comparative linguistics
· culture, literature and folklore
· history of Lithuania, Lithuanian-Polish relations
· politics, law and society
During the 8th International Lithuania Congress a diverse cultural program, and expert debates will be presented.
The official languages of the Congress are: Polish, Lithuanian, Ukrainian, English. Suggested speech duration: 15 minutes. There are plans of publication of the Congress’ materials.
Administrative fee (for speakers): 60 PLN/15€.
Application deadline: 1st of April, 2026.
